Erasing Katrina Four years on, media mostly neglect an ongoing disaster

FAIR 9/2/09

August 29 marked the fourth anniversary of the day Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. The devastation wrought by both the hurricane itself and the government's inept response prompted remarkably critical corporate media coverage that promised to fight for Katrina survivors and change the way we talk about poverty and race (FAIR Media Advisory, 9/9/05).

As NBC's Brian Williams told the St. Petersburg Times (3/1/06), "If this does not spark a national discussion on… Continue

UFPJ's Nuclear-Free Future Month Kicks Off with International Petition Drive

Konichi-wa! (Hello!) I am here in Nagasaki for the solemn commemoration of the 64th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of this beautiful port city. On August 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima and then another on Nagasaki three days later. With just two bombs, more than 200,000 people -- mostly civilians -- were instantly incinerated or died from radiation poisoning by the end of 1945. Many more have died since and are still dying from the effects of radiation. The… Continue

08:19 AM CDT on Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Michael Luke / Eyewitness News WWLTV

NEW ORLEANS – A lawsuit by property owners in the Lower 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish against the Army Corps Engineers alleging that the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet caused catastrophic flooding of their homes can go forward after a ruling by a federal court judge.

For Veterans, a Weekend Pass From Homelessness
By ERIK ECKHOLM

SAN DIEGO — The future mix of homeless veterans was signaled here last weekend at Stand Down, an annual three-day tent city that provides respite and aid to former members of the armed forces whose lives have collapsed.
The number of homeless veterans who made their way to a high school’s athletic fields for the gathering reached a record high, some 950 compared with last year’s record… Continue

Chinese-made drywal has sulfur

NEW ORLEANS — The Environmental Protection Agency has found sulfur and other materials in a small sampling of Chinese-made drywall, which some officials and residents blame for sickening fumes and corroding metal in homes in several states.

Several federal and state agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating complaints that the drywall is causing health problems and two U.S. senators who released the report Tuesday said it sheds light on what was in the… Continue

Dear Gordon,

my name is András Mikó, I'm writing this message on the behalf of Ferenc and István Ivanics, the brothers who form the WorldWalk-Peacetour Team, who are walking around the Earth in the name of peace, brotherhood and friendship. Now they are in Tallahassee, Fl, and they will arrive New Orleans on 5th July. We'd like to arrange a presentation for them about their concept of peace, and about their experiences of walking in Europe, Africa and the USA. To know more about the project, please, visit their blog (http://worldwalk-peacetour.blogspot.com) and their info site (http://worldwalk-peacetour.info).

There was already a very good presentation in Orlando, Fl (http://worldwalk-peacetour.blogspot.com/2009/06/presentation-in-orlando.html), we planning a similar one, maybe for a bit wider audience. Now we are looking for a good place, to organize it. We don't really know New Orleans, that's why we are looking now for a local contact, a peace activist or an owner of a public place (cafe, library etc.). Please, help us, and please, forward this message to anybody who maybe could help us.

Thank you in advance
Peace
András and the WorldWalk Team

You interrupted perhaps one of the single most important drum, tambourine, bucket and drum experiences of my life in Congo Square that day. The same guy (must be a a local favorite) also played with me after the Satchmo affair, you were there.. and again at the Mardi Gras drum circle. Fortunately, I picked up enough rhythm to get me through.. ya uld coot.. wish you were here or I was down there!
