About Me:
I am a grandmother coming from a family where the men have always gone to war. Five of my grandsons have served since the invasion of Iraq by the Bush Administration, which was based on false information concerning 911. It was an inside job and not from anything Saddam Hussein participated in. Three of these grandsons have served four years each and many tours in Iraq and are now discharged. Two younger ones are training and waiting to go over. I wrote a letter to the editor here in a 85% republican county which was printed on December 30, 2007 as follows:
Who Cares?

Is it unrealistic of me to believe that this war is unwarranted and is unwanted by the majority of the citizens of the United States? Our soldiers are dying and being wounded everyday in Iraq and Afghanistan. This war has gone on for five years. There is no proof whatsoever that Saddam Hussein had anything to do with the demolition of the Towers.

More of the Kansas National Guard were killed and wounded this week. If everyone that opposes the war would take to the streets and sidewalks with signs protesting this situation, I believe the war would end..

Yes, I am aware that those that volunteered to go into the military did so with great commitment and courage, intending to protect our country. I do not have the statistics of how many of Americans were killed in WWII; Korea; or Vietnam but I know they would be disappointed to realize that our young people are still going through the same kind of pain and suffering that they endured.

In an article from OneWorld US, Dec 12, 2007, Aaron Glantz writes about the suicides among Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans. Quote, “The Department of Veterans Affairs doesn't keep track of the number of veterans who commit suicide, but a CBS news investigation last month found that 120 veterans kill themselves every week; or nearly 1,500 per year.” Of course, these deaths are not counted with the Iraq casualties. Also, those that die from their wounds after coming back to the states are not counted either.

To date, 3,894 of our troops have been killed. As of Dec 5, 2007, the Pentagon reports 30,000 Americans have been wounded in the wars. Amputations of 719; making a total of 795 to include non combat amputations. Heartaches, and sorrows combined with financial problems can easily overcome families when faced with these calamities.

Does this nation care enough to stop this? Ellouese Upton, 302 W Poplar, Independence, KS 67301
